State of Nebraska Judicial BranchBlair High School students were given a firsthand look at the judicial process from inside their school when the Nebraska Supreme Court convened in the school's auditorium on November 4, 2026. The event was held at the invitation of Principal Mark Gutschow and underscored the Court’s commitment to civics education and public engagement with support from the Nebraska State Bar Foundation.
In hosting the event, Blair High School transformed its auditorium into a courtroom for the mid-morning proceedings. The program began at 10:00 with a welcome from Principal Gutschow, then an introductory presentation by District Court Judge Zachary Blackman, who provided context for the arguments and explained the appellate process. Following the introduction, two court arguments took place on stage. Cases argued were Hall County School District 40-0082 v. Sackschewsky out of Hall County and State v. Smith out of Lancaster County.
After the conclusion of arguments, students had the opportunity to engage in a question-and-answer session with the Supreme Court. Open to the public, this session offered a unique opportunity to witness the legal system in action and fostered a deeper understanding of the court's role and the importance of civics in American society.
